New Lions coach sees no immediate miracles

There will be no instant miracle cure for the Detroit Lions, according to the man named Friday to guide the team's fortunes after the worst season in National Football League history.

Jim Schwartz, who spent the past eight years as defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, took the task of rebuilding the Lions, whose 0-16 season was the first winless run since the NFL expanded to a 16-game campaign.

"I think you can't look too far ahead with that," Schwartz said. "The way you take care of that is getting better in training camp and keep your eye on that. The end will take care of itself.

"I think if you talk about a quick turnaround, it's probably not going to happen. If you talk about getting better every single day, then you have a chance to be there."

Schwartz plans a "back to basics" approach after leaving the NFL's best team, which went 11-3 this year, for a team that has nowhere to go but up in trying to win its first NFL title since 1957.

"You build teams to run the football and to stop the run," Schwartz said. "You've got to be big and strong."

The Lions, who lost 47-10 to the Titans in November, fired Rod Marinelli on December 29, the day after the conclusion of the woeful season. Marinelli was 10-38 in three seasons guiding the Lions.
